Thailand re-entry permit: protect your current stay before travel
A re-entry permit can preserve an existing permission to stay when you leave Thailand and return. It does not extend that permission, renew a visa, or add time to the date already stamped in your passport.
What a Thailand re-entry permit does
Thai Immigration treats a visa, a permission to stay, and a re-entry permit as different things. A visa is used to seek entry. Your current permission to stay is the period recorded by Immigration after entry or an approved extension. A re-entry permit is designed to preserve the unexpired balance of that current permission while you travel.
If you leave Thailand without the re-entry permission required for your situation, your existing permission to stay may be treated as terminated. If a re-entry permit is granted and used correctly, you return to the same underlying permission and its original end date.
The Royal Thai Embassy's guidance explains the same distinction between visa validity and period of stay. Always make the travel decision from your current Immigration stamps, not from the word “visa” alone.
Do you need a re-entry permit before leaving?
Start with the permission you want to rely on when you return. Do not assume the answer from a visa label, a previous entry, or the number of trips on your itinerary.
- Find the current end date. Check the latest admitted-until or extension stamp in your passport.
- Confirm what you want to preserve. If you want to return on the remaining period of that same permission, assess the re-entry route before departure.
- Count the trips. One planned departure/return points toward single use; repeated travel may make multiple use more practical.
- Check the travel dates. The return must fit within the underlying permission. A permit cannot extend an expiring stay.
- Confirm the filing route. The responsible office can differ for general Bangkok, special-law/BOI, migrant-worker, and airport cases.
If you hold a multiple-entry visa, do not assume that wording answers the question. A valid visa may support a new entry, while a re-entry permit is about preserving the current permission. Decide which status you intend to use and have the passport reviewed if the stamps are unclear.
Single versus multiple re-entry permit

Choose by the number and timing of realistic trips, not by the longer label. A multiple permit can be poor value if the current permission ends soon; a single permit can be inadequate if a second departure is already planned.
Bangkok document checklist and government fees
The current office and your passport history determine the final list. The Immigration Division 1 re-entry-permit page is the official Bangkok starting point. A practical file normally includes:
- Original passport.
- Completed TM.8 re-entry-permit application form.
- A recent photograph meeting the office's current specification.
- Copies of the passport identity page and any page showing a changed identity detail.
- Copy of the latest entry stamp or permission record.
- Copy of the current extension stamp, if the permission comes from an extension.
- Any additional evidence requested for a restricted-travel or special-route case.
Official Bangkok Immigration guidance lists a government application fee of THB 1,000 for single use and THB 3,800 for multiple use. Confirm the current amount, accepted payment method, form revision, and photograph rule with the filing office before attending. These are government fees, not Bangkok Visas service fees.
Where to apply in Bangkok
Immigration Division 1 guidance routes general Bangkok cases through the Government Complex at Chaeng Wattana. Special-law or BOI cases and some migrant-worker cases may use different service centres. Office, floor, counter, hours, and appointment practice can change, so confirm the responsible location for your status before travelling.
Official guidance also describes an international-departure airport route on the day of travel. Treat that as a route to verify, not a guaranteed last-minute service. Availability, operating hours, queue conditions, required documents, and the time needed before departure can vary.
Checks before departure and after return
- Read the permit stamp and confirm whether it is single or multiple.
- Check that passport details and the underlying permission-to-stay date match your records.
- Keep a copy or clear photograph of the permit and current Immigration stamps.
- On return, present the passport and re-entry evidence as directed and check the new arrival stamp before leaving the counter.
- Make sure the admitted-until date reflects the remaining underlying permission; raise a discrepancy promptly with Immigration.
- Recalculate separate compliance dates after travel, including 90-day reporting and any address-record checks.
A re-entry permit does not complete a TM30 accommodation notification, a 90-day report, or a Thai visa extension. Track each obligation separately.
