Thailand visa extension in Bangkok: choose the route before the checklist

Start with your permission-to-stay date

A Thai visa's validity tells you when it can be used to seek entry. It does not automatically tell you how long you may remain after entry. Immigration records your permitted stay in the passport or an electronic record, usually with an admitted-until or extension date.

That current permission-to-stay date is the first deadline to check. Applying for an extension is a separate request to Immigration; it does not happen automatically because a visa sticker, work permit, school enrolment, marriage certificate, or other supporting document remains valid.

There is no universal Thailand visa extension

Immigration considers an extension under a stated reason or category. Before collecting documents, identify your current entry basis, why you need to remain, and which category can legally support that request. Approval and the period granted remain matters for Immigration.

Retirement-led extensions use their own financial, residence, and sometimes insurance evidence. Bangkok Visas does not position retirement as a hero product; use Retire Easy Thailand's retirement visa service for that route.

If your reason for staying has changed, an extension may not be the right filing. Check whether you need a visa-type change assessment or a new visa application instead.

Common starting documents and route-specific additions

The Immigration Division 1 extension page publishes separate criteria and lists for many extension reasons. A common starting file may include:

• Original passport and copies of the identity, current visa, latest entry, and permission-to-stay pages.
• Completed TM.7 application using the current official form.
• A recent photograph meeting the responsible office's specification.
• Current Bangkok address information and any address or TM30 evidence requested for the case.
• Proof of the current extension reason.
• Any appointment, queue, or application confirmation required for that route.

The category file may then require employer and corporate records, school letters, relationship certificates, financial evidence, insurance, medical confirmation, translations, legalisation, or copies certified in a particular way. Do not borrow a checklist from a different category.

Bangkok office routing, timing, and government fee

Long-stay and category-specific applications are commonly associated with Immigration Division 1 at the Government Complex, Chaeng Wattana. Bangkok Immigration has also used IT Square Laksi for some short-stay routes in recent periods. Special-law/BOI and migrant-worker cases can have separate service locations.

Do not choose the office only from an old map or another applicant's experience. Confirm the current location, floor, counter, appointment practice, personal-attendance rule, and accepted payment method for your exact entry basis before travelling.

Official Bangkok Immigration guidance lists a THB 1,900 government application fee for common TM.7 extension applications. Confirm the current amount and payment method with the responsible office. The government fee is separate from any Bangkok Visas document-review or filing-support fee.

Apply before the current permission expires, but do not publish or rely on one universal “apply this many days early” rule. Some categories need employer, school, bank, insurance, translation, or civil-status documents that take longer to assemble, and local filing windows can vary.

Practical steps before a Bangkok extension

1. Read the passport. Record the latest entry basis and current admitted-until or extension date.
2. Name the reason. Identify the extension category that matches why you will remain in Thailand.
3. Open the official list. Use the current Bangkok Immigration criteria for that category, not a generic social-media checklist.
4. Confirm the office. Check whether the case goes to Chaeng Wattana, IT Square, a one-stop centre, or another responsible location.
5. Build the base file. Prepare TM.7, passport copies, photograph, and current address information.
6. Add route evidence. Obtain the employer, school, family, financial, insurance, medical, or authority documents that the selected route actually requires.
7. Check consistency. Resolve expired documents, spelling differences, old passport numbers, and address mismatches.
8. Keep the result. After Immigration acts, read the stamp or record before leaving and retain any receipt or follow-up instruction.

An application is not an approval. Immigration may request more evidence, direct the case to another counter, or exercise discretion under the current rules.

Extension, reporting, address records, and travel are separate

A visa extension is not a 90-day address report. It does not automatically correct a missing TM30 accommodation record. If you will travel after an extension, check whether you need a Thailand re-entry permit to preserve the new permission.

Keep one immigration calendar with the permission-to-stay expiry, 90-day reporting date, passport validity, work or school document deadlines, and travel dates. Then treat each filing as its own task.
